Third Professor Surjit Singh Memorial Lecture

ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION OF THE INDIAN ECONOMY: RETROSPECT & PROSPECT
Economic transformation has been a core theme in public policy discourse. The industrial revolution has enabled some countries to successfully transform their economies, while others are still struggling to catch up. In recent times, a successful economic transformation of East Asian Countries and, more specifically, China has reignited interest in this theme and demonstrated that it is possible to forge ahead if the state pursues right kind of public policies.

In the post-independence era, the government of India has pursued a public policy for economic transformation. However, the Indian economy is still struggling to achieve her long-cherished goal of socio-economic transformation. The lecture delineates – why India has failed to succeed on economic transformation. To spot the areas of success and failures of the long journey after independence is one of the objectives of the lecture. It is worth examining the extent to which the Covid-19 shock has altered the course of the movement of economic and social transformation in India.
